John Lansdown founded System Simulation in London with his colleague George Mallen and others from the Computer Arts Society. Through it, he developed major innovations in computer animation such as special effects for advertisements and television titles; effects for the feature films Alien (1979), Saturn III, and Heavy Metal; and the realization of the original animated Channel 4 logo. John created what was then the world's largest computer-generated mural (reviewed in Building Design as a "waste of electricity," although few today would question the bright power of his creative output). John Lansdown chaired the company until 1988.
