The Institut national de l'audiovisuel (INA) was interested in computer graphics and associated themselves with the French defense contractor Thompson CSF to create the Paris-based Thomson Digital Image. Managed by Pascal Bap and Jean Charles Hourcade, TDI developed the 3D animation software Explore and also did production work.

Known particularly for their Explore - Interactive Photorealistic Renderer (IPR) interface, TDI even opened a sales branch called Rainbow Images in San Jose.

The production division merged in 1989 with Sogitec to form Ex Machina. TDI (the software company) also was at one time half owned by IBM. In 1990, TDI released the first versions of their software for the PC. The software division was then bought by Wavefront in 1993. Wavefront in turn was bought by SGI and merged with Alias.
