While R/GA itself was founded in 1977, Chris Woods set up the computer graphics department in 1981. Early on, some folks (including Jonathan Luskin) did some research, but not until 1985 did the CG department really get off the ground. The initial crew was all from MAGI/Synthavision: Josh Pines and Ken Perlin wrote the R/GA rendering code, Jan Carlee and Christine Chang were joined later by Jacques Stroweis, Tom Miller, Jim Goodman, Kevin Bjorke, and Job Francis. Integral to RGA up to that point was a world-class optical and motion-control effects department headed by Joel Hynek and Stuart Robertson. R/GA today promotes itself as 'advertising for the digital age'.

Digital FX supervisors Jacques Stroweis (from RGA.NY) and Laurel Klick (ILM) were recruited to startup the Digital Film Department and launched into production with "Last Action Hero".
