Ray tracing was first developed in the 1960s by Robert Goldstein & Roger Nagel at MAGi, and Arthur Appel at IBM. Other developers at this stage included Herb Steinberg, Marty Cohen, and Eugene Troubetskoy (Magi/Synthavision). Papers presented at SIGGRAPH by Turner Whitted & Steve Ruben of Bell Labs in 1979 and 1980 expanded its utilization with specular reflection and refraction. Rob Cook, Thomas Porter and Loren Carpenter's 194 "Distributed Raytracing" expanded its potential.
